Carbon Cave
Carbon Cave consists of a scale model and photographs, which together form a portrait of the underground workplace. The underground spaces once so ubiquitous to the Zuid Limburg province of the Netherlands no longer exist. The mineshafts are now filled with concrete, the underground tunnels collapsed or inundated. With Carbon Cave, Meulendijks does not simply reconstruct the underground workplaces of old, but gives us a fragment that intensifies our experience of these places that are no more. The coal deposits are replaced by carbon paper. Her methods are labor-intensive: the model is manually constructed using a basic, monochromatic technique, which relates to her analog photography. Carbon Cave invokes a dark atmosphere, alluding to the archetype of an underground place that forms the gateway to another world.
